Safer gambling
The bit where we drop the pub talk
No jokes in this section. Free bets are entertainment, not income — no offer on this page (or anywhere) makes betting profitable by design. You must be 18 or over to bet in the UK. Decide what you can afford before you claim anything, set limits on day one, and if it stops being fun, stop — and talk to someone.
Five rules we'd give any mate
- Set a deposit limit before your first bet. Every UKGC bookie has the tool, it takes two minutes, and future-you will be glad.
- Budget once a month, not once a bet. Decide what the month's entertainment costs — and when it's spent, it's spent.
- Never chase. Not into the next offer, not into the next race, not anywhere. Chasing is how a hobby becomes a problem.
- Never bet borrowed money, or money that has a job to do — rent, bills, the food shop. No offer on Earth changes that rule.
- If you're hiding it, that's the signal. Betting you'd rather nobody knew about is betting that's stopped being fun — talk to someone, starting with the free helpline below.
How to tell it's stopped being fun
Betting more than you planned. Topping up deposits you promised yourself you wouldn't. Chasing losses. Borrowing. Feeling flat when you're not betting, or fibbing — to yourself included — about how much it is. None of these mean you're broken; they mean it's time for a breather and a chat. The helpline below is free, confidential, staffed by people who've heard it all before, and open 24/7.
Three myths worth killing
“I'm due a win.” No. The coin, the horse, the goal has no memory of what came before it. A losing streak makes the next bet no more likely to win, ever. This is the belief that turns a bad afternoon into a bad month.
“If I understood football better, I'd win.” Sometimes. Mostly no. Bookmakers price markets with more information than any punter, and take a margin (the overround) on top. Knowing football is fun and makes betting more interesting, it does not turn losing bets into winning ones at scale.
“I can win it back.” This is the dangerous one. Chasing losses is the single most common path from casual betting to harmful betting. If you catch yourself topping up a deposit specifically to win back what you lost this afternoon, close the app for the day. Every day. That instinct is what the helpline and the tools on this page exist to interrupt.
Worried about someone else's gambling rather than your own? GamCare supports family and friends too — same number, same confidentiality.
