Free bets, answered properly

The basics

How do free bets actually work, start to finish?

Four steps. One: open the account through the offer link — that's what applies the offer, no code needed. Two: deposit and place the qualifying bet with your own money — minimum stake, at or above the minimum odds, from a payment method that qualifies. Three: the free bets land once that bet settles, usually within a few hours. Four: stake them before they expire — winnings are yours, the free-bet stake isn't returned. That's the entire machine; everything else is detail.

Are free bets really free?

The free bet is. Getting it isn't, quite — you usually stake a qualifying bet with your own money first, and that tenner is at risk like any normal bet. That's the bit everyone glosses over, so we don't. 18+, T&Cs apply.

Can I withdraw a free bet as cash?

No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. You stake the free bet; if it wins, the winnings (minus the free-bet stake, almost always) are yours to withdraw. Check each bookie's terms.

Do free bets expire?

Almost always — 7 days is the norm, occasionally 30, and the clock usually starts when they're credited, not when you remember them. Every ticket on this page shows the expiry chip. Free bets dying unused is the quietest way bookies save money.

Do I need a promo code?

Not here. Our links land you on each bookie's welcome page with the offer already applied. If one ever needs a code, we'll print it next to the offer — no scavenger hunts.

What's the difference between a free bet and a bonus bet?

Nothing meaningful — it's the same product with two names. UK bookmakers say 'free bet', US sportsbooks say 'bonus bet', occasionally you'll see 'token' or 'stake credit' in an app. All four mean the same thing: a stake the bookmaker fronts you, that pays winnings but not the stake back, with an expiry and minimum-odds attached. On SoccerHacks we say 'free bet' for the UK market and 'bonus bet' for the US, because that's what the punters and the T&Cs on each side call them.

Getting it right

Claiming, without the fumbles

What do minimum odds like 1/2 mean?

Your qualifying bet has to be at odds of at least that price — 1/2 fractional is 1.5 decimal. Stick your tenner on something at 1/5 and the free bet quietly never arrives. It's the most common way people fumble these.

Why didn't my free bet arrive?

Nine times out of ten it's one of four things: the qualifying bet was under the minimum odds; you deposited with an excluded method (PayPal, Skrill and Neteller are the usual suspects); you missed an opt-in button; or the bet simply hasn't settled yet — free bets land after settlement, not after kick-off. If it's none of those, live chat usually sorts it in minutes.

Can I use free bets on accas or bet builders?

Usually, yes — most books let free bets go on singles, accas and bet builders alike, though some fence off specific markets or cap the odds. Check the bookie's terms for the market you want; if it's allowed, a free bet on a big-price acca is a perfectly good use of a stake that was never yours.

What happens if my free bet wins?

You get the winnings, not the stake: a £10 free bet at 3.0 pays £20, not £30. “Stake not returned” — four words that explain 90% of free-bet disappointment. It's on every ticket above.

Can I claim more than one offer?

Yep — one welcome offer per bookie, new customers only, so you can work down the wall. Do it at your own pace and never chase a loss into the next offer. These are treats, not a wage.

Can I use a free bet on a bet builder or same-game acca?

Almost always yes — bet builders and same-game accas are the two most popular ways UK punters spend welcome free bets, and every bookie on this page allows it. What varies is the minimum number of legs, whether individual legs need to meet a minimum price, and whether cash-out is available on a bet built from a free-bet stake (usually not). If a bet builder feels like the natural home for your free bet, that's fine, just remember stake-not-returned applies exactly the same way, so a £10 free bet on a 10/1 builder pays £100 not £110.

Can I split a free bet across several bets?

Usually not — free bets arrive as fixed tokens (Betfred's £50, for instance, lands as five separate £10 bets) and each token is staked whole. You can't break a £10 token into two £5 bets. Plan your bets to fit the tokens, not the other way round — it's why the split is printed on our spec tables.

Do welcome offers work on the app?

Yes — sign up through the offer link first, then log into the bookie's app; the offer follows the account, not the device. A few bookies run app-exclusive extras on top of the welcome; where one exists, we flag it on the ticket.

What exactly counts as a 'qualifying bet'?

The first real-money bet that unlocks the offer: minimum stake, at or above the minimum odds, from a qualifying payment method — and at some bookies, on specific markets or bet types (Betway's must be a 3+ leg acca, for instance). It settles like any normal bet, win or lose, and the free bets follow. Our qualifying-bet guide walks through it properly.

The bottom line

Money matters

Which free bet offer is best right now?

As of 17 July 2026: Betfred's Bet £10, Get £50 is the biggest multiplier on the page — 5× your stake from a household name. Betsuna matches the 5× if you don't mind a much smaller book, and Midnite's £10 → £40 with published min odds of 1/2 is the cleanest of the newer bookies. 'Best' always depends on the small print — which is the whole reason this site exists.

Is it safe to claim these offers?

Every bookie on this page holds a Gambling Commission licence for Great Britain, and you must be 18+. Set a deposit limit on day one — takes two minutes. If it ever stops being fun, GambleAware.org or 0808 8020 133, free and confidential.
