The method

How bonus bets actually work

No "guaranteed winners", no locks, no whale picks — the only edge on this page is knowing the fine print better than the next guy.

STEP 01

Pick your ticket

Every ticket shows what matters: the multiplier, the structure (instant, win-only, or insurance), and the expiry. The catch is printed on the ticket — not buried in section 12.

STEP 02

Place the qualifying bet

That first bet is real money and it can lose. With insurance-style offers, never bet the headline number just to unlock it — bet what you'd normally bet.

STEP 03

Use the bonus bets fast

Most expire in about 7 days, and when a bonus bet wins you get the winnings, not the stake. That one sentence is 90% of the fine print.

The $5 → $150, walked through properly

Take the classic FanDuel structure. You deposit and put $5 on anything — in most states it doesn't even need to win. When it settles, $150 in bonus bets lands, usually as several smaller bonus bets. You stake those knowing bonus bets pay winnings only: a $25 bonus bet at +100 returns $25, not $50. Nothing here is 'guaranteed profit' — anyone promising that is lying to you. The game is that $5 of risk unlocks $150 of chances, on terms you read first. And with insurance-style offers (BetMGM, Caesars), flip the logic entirely: bet your normal size, because the 'up to $1,500' only means anything if you were staking that anyway.

The four pieces of fine print that decide everything

Odds floorSome books require the qualifying bet at -200 or longer. Shorter than the floor and the bonus never triggers — no error message, nothing.
Non-withdrawableBonus bets can only be staked, never cashed out. Win, and the winnings (minus the bonus stake) become real, withdrawable money. Lose, and they're gone.
ExpiryMost bonus bets die in about 7 days, counted from when they're credited. The books are betting you'll forget. Don't.
State varianceThe same headline changes shape across state lines — win-only in one state, win-or-lose next door. The map decides your fine print; always check the terms for where you're standing.

Five ways people fumble a bonus

  • Betting the headline number on an insurance offer. The $1,500 cap is a ceiling, not a suggestion — bet what you'd normally bet.
  • Betting from the wrong state, or over a VPN. It voids winnings, breaches terms, and can lose you the account. Not worth it, ever.
  • Burning all your bonus bets on one wild parlay because they 'felt free.' They're worth exactly what you'd stake with real money — spend them like it.
  • Missing the 7-day expiry. Set a reminder the day the tokens land.
  • Expecting the stake back when a bonus bet wins. Winnings only — the one sentence that explains most bonus-bet disappointment.
How we rank, straight up: biggest sportsbook first — a bonus is also a choice about who holds your bankroll. The stub shows the value; where a smaller book out-bids a bigger one, you'll see it. We only list books licensed in legal states, and by the way — the industry says "bonus bets," not "free bets," because several state regulators banned the word "free" for offers that need your money first. We think that rule is fair, so we talk the same way. Sign up through our links and the book pays us a commission — it never changes your offer.
